The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to contest specific decisions made by the official, echoing the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
