The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
