Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," he commented. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
