A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
